Suzie S. Thorn

In Memoriam: Suzie S. Thorn, Esq.

1932–2025

We are deeply saddened to share the passing of Suzie S. Thorn, Esq., former ICCFR Trustee and long-time supporter, who died peacefully at her home in San Francisco on 10 June 2025, just one week before her 93rd birthday.

Suzie was a trailblazing family law attorney in San Francisco for over 50 years, known for her sharp intellect and tireless advocacy—particularly in international child abduction cases under the Hague Convention. A Phi Beta Kappa graduate of UC Berkeley, she was regularly recognised among The Best Lawyers in America.

A Champion for ICCFR

Suzie’s involvement with ICCFR began nearly 30 years ago, when she hosted the 1997 San Francisco conference and joined the Board. From that moment on, her commitment to the organisation never waivered.

She inspired colleagues and friends to engage with ICCFR, contributed powerful presentations, and helped bring in outstanding speakers, many of whom remain active today. Suzie believed deeply in human rights and was a fearless voice whenever those values were challenged, helping to foster ICCFR’s culture of open, principled dialogue.

Building a Sustainable Future

Suzie was instrumental in securing UK charitable status for ICCFR in 2003, an achievement she led with determination, alongside Derek Hill and Gerlind Richards MBE. She also championed funding initiatives and supported ICCFR through the Suzie S. Thorn Family Foundation.

A regular presence at ICCFR conferences and planning meetings, often joined by her late husband Professor Joseph Thorn, Suzie brought warmth, wisdom, and boundless generosity to all she did.

She is survived by her son, Joe Thorn Jr., and by the many whose lives she touched across the ICCFR community and beyond.
