“Not all Refugees are Treated Equally – the Special Challenges of Families and Children in Refugee Crises”

Forcibly displaced around the world are by definition vulnerable, but women and children face even greater challenges, especially in humanitarian crises that are relatively neglected by donors around the world. How can we keep children refugees from becoming a “Lost Generation”? Amb. Mark Storella (Ret.) will discuss where the fault lines lie and what can be done – including for refugees who are being resettled in Europe and America. Amb. Storella will draw upon his experience as a former Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Population, Refugees, and Migration, a U.S. ambassador in Africa, and coordinator for refugees and internally displaced in Iraq.

“Families affected by Substance Use: Building Resilience”

Families in which there is substance use go through typical experiences that influence the way children and other members function. It is imperative to recognise and interrupt disempowering or life diminishing systems and cultural norms that stifle children and family members and limit their contribution to child and family wellbeing. This webinar highlights the impact of alcohol and other substance use on children and families and possible interventions that build resilience.

“Avoiding fragmentation in family policy: reflections from some European countries”

In conjunction with Coface Families Europe and CISF (Centro Internazionale Studi Famiglia) this webinar focuses on the role of public policies in supporting or challenging the wellbeing of families, by considering the different models adopted by various European countries in mixing various forms of support. Every country shows its own specific mix, and there is no “one best solution,” but a common risk is the possible fragmentation among the different interventions, such as care services, work-life balance, economic and fiscal support.
