Terry Prendergast (Chair)

photoTerry Prendergast (UK) has been Chair of the ICCFR Board since mid-2005. He is Chief Executive of Marriage Care, a voluntary organisation supporting couples and families throughout England. Terry had previously held a senior management role within Relate. He has been the Regional Social Work Manager in the North of England with the Church of England Children’s Society and has worked as a psychiatric social worker qualified as a Group-Analytic psychotherapist.

Claire Missen (Vice- Chair)

photoClaire Missen (Ireland) has worked as a marriage counsellor for more than twenty two years, initially with the Marriage and Relationship Counselling Service, Dublin, and latterly in private practice and as a supervisor. Claire was first involved with ICCFR during its Stockholm conference (2001), subsequently joined the Board and was invited to serve as Vice-Chair in 2006.

Claire Barnes (Treasurer)

photoClaire Barnes (USA) has been the Executive Director of Kids’ Turn, San Francisco, for the past seven years. That organisation helps children made vulnerable by family breakdown. She is also Chair of the Volunteer Council of the San Francisco Symphony. Claire and husband Alan have participated in ICCFR conferences for some years and she joined the Board in 2005, taking on the position of Treasurer in June 2008.

Charlie Hoare

photoSir Charles Hoare Bt. (UK) studied at both the University of Durham and the London School of Economics. Since 1998 he has been the International Secretary at CARE which he represents at the United Nations. Married with a growing family Charlie first attended an ICCFR conference in Lyon (2006) and accepted an invitation to serve as one of the Commission’s Board members later in that year

Chantal Lebatard

photoChantal Lebatard (France) is a qualified French literature teacher. For more than twenty years she has been an active volunteer in the French family movement, first being concerned with multiple births and since 1990 with the National Union of Family Associations (UNAF) as “administrateur” (governor). She has participated in many  government sponsored working groups and since 2000 she has been mandated by UNAF to maintain its link with ICCFR and has been one of the Commission’s Board members. Chantal played a key role in the planning of the 2006 conference in Lyon.

Marc Morris

photoMarc Morris (Belgium) After gaining a licenciate’s law degree Marc entered the public service, at some time serving as legal adviser to the Ministry of Flanders. Since 1993 he has held a number of senior posts and worked alongside several Flemish Ministers. He is currently Secretary-General  of the Flemish Department of Welfare, Public Health and Families. His first contact with ICCFR was at the 1999 Durban conference. In 2003 he organised the magnificent 50th Anniversary ICCFR conference and he became a Board member in 2004.

Robin Purvis

photoRobin Purvis (Australia) is a child and family therapist in private practice. Her expertise is in the field of childhood trauma and its long-term impact. She complements her clinical practice with training, supervision and forensic assessments for the Family and Children’s Courts. Robin has participated in ICCFR events since 1995 and became a Board member in 2005.

Insa Schöningh

photoDr. Insa Schöningh (Germany) is a sociologist and the Chief Executive of the German Protestant Family Policy Organisation (Evangelische Aktionsgemeinschaft für Familienfragen, EAF). The purpose of this voluntary association is counselling in ethical, social, economic and legal questions when it comes to family policy. Other aims are the promotion of family counselling, programmes to enhance the educational competence of parents as well as age-based education.   Insa joined the ICCFR Board in 2006.

Suzie Thorn

photoSuzie S Thorn (USA) is a prominent matrimonial lawyer in San Francisco. She is President  of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers Foundation, of the Suzie S Thorn Family Foundation, and of Schapiro-Thorn Inc. Her initial contact with ICCFR resulted from liaison between the Commission and Association of Family and Conciliation Courts in 1993. She became a Board member in 1995. She was the innovative founder of the ICCFR Trust of which she is now a trustee.

Anna Vella

photoDr. Anna Vella is a senior doctor at the General Hospital in Malta where she specialises in care for pregnant women with a substance misuse problem and women who are sex workers. She is president of the Cana Movement in Malta which provides marriage education and enrichment programmes and works with couples and individuals facing difficulties in their marriages.

Martin Wiklander

photoMartin Wiklander (Sweden) is qualified as a social worker and as a psychotherapist specializing in systemic family therapy. He has twenty years experience as a couple counsellor. He is a university lecturer in social work, couple counselling and supervision. For ten years he served on the Board of the Swedish organisation for couple counsellors (KFR) and was the Board’s Chair for four years. Martin joined the ICCFR Board in 2005.


Administrator: Carol Van Selm

photoCarol van Selm  (Administrator) (UK)  Carol began working with Gerlind Richards in 2006 and has increasingly become able to  share in the administration of the Commission. Having grown up and been educated in South Africa Carol is now established in England with her husband and young family. Carol is committed to, and has an enthusiasm for, the work of the Commission and has already had a significant impact on its administration.
